San Francesco, Saint Patron of Calabria and of sailors, was born in this city and his presence is still strong owing to the devotion of his followers living in Paola and of the pilgrims coming here to pray in his shrine. During summer the shores of Paola are crowded by tourists and emigrants, who come back every year, attracted by the wonderful sea, the mild climate and the love for their Saint.
